Sound familiar?

Watercolor can feel so unpredictable until you start understanding what the water is doing.

It’s paper moisture and brush moisture,
working together.

  • Blooms you didn't plan
  • Hard edges where you wanted softness
  • Washes that dry patchy and uneven

When I first picked up a brush, I thought watercolor was about trying to control the water.

Some days a wash would melt beautifully into the paper. Other days the very same colors bloomed, puddled or dried with hard edges I never planned. And I couldn't tell you why.

Maybe you know that feeling. You follow a tutorial step by step, and your painting still behaves differently. You want to paint with confidence, but the water seems to have its own plans.

Here's what I've learned: the water isn't working against you. It's telling you something. Once you learn to read it, you can work with it.

In The Art of Water Control, I'll show you how water moves between your brush and your paper. We'll look at wet, damp and dry paper, wet, damp and dry brushes, and what happens when they meet. You'll build your own Water Control Grid, a map you can return to whenever a painting surprises you.

By the end, you'll have a much clearer understanding of why things happen on your paper, and how to choose what happens next.

Observation leads to understanding, and understanding gives us the freedom to create.

Meet your teacher

Hi, I'm Rachel!

A watercolor artist specializing in realistic portraits of people and animals. I'm fascinated by the way watercolor balances delicacy with intention. Its transparency can create incredible softness and light, yet every brushstroke asks us to observe, understand, and trust the process.

Before becoming an artist, I worked as a watchmaker, and that experience still shapes the way I approach watercolor today. I feel like I'm running a diagnosis with every painting: asking what happened, why it happened, and how water behaved between the paper and the brush.

With every painting, I came to understand the medium on a deeper level. This is the approach I love sharing: helping watercolor lovers understand the medium more deeply, gain confidence with water control, and paint with greater intention and freedom.

Imagine this

Paint with intention, not guesswork

Imagine laying down a wash seeing the paint behave the way you expected.

Imagine seeing a bloom appear and knowing why it happened, and what to do next.

Imagine choosing soft or crisp edges on purpose, wherever your painting needs them.

I know how frustrating watercolor can feel at the beginning. You might love the softness and light in other people's paintings, but feel unsure about how much water to use, when to add the next layer, or why a wash dried the way it did. I've been there too, and that's exactly why I created this course.

The Art of Water Control was designed to take the mystery out of water, one small experiment at a time.

You'll practice with your own paper and brushes, test what happens, and learn to read the results. Everything is explained slowly and clearly, so you can follow along at your own pace and build understanding you can keep.

Let's slow down, observe, and learn to understand what the water is doing.

How the lessons work

The Art of Water Control helps you build real understanding through a clear, structured process. Instead of copying steps, you'll learn to observe what water is doing and respond to it.

Lessons are filmed with close-up views of the brush and paper, so you can see exactly how the water moves. You can adjust the playback speed and watch at your own pace.

The course is practical and carefully structured. You'll stretch your paper, set your brush moisture, build your Water Control Grid, diagnose common problems and finish with a guided study. You can revisit the lessons anytime as your practice grows.
